Proud Grandad

October 24th, 2008

Nothing to do with adventure holidays I agree, but I had to show you this.

Our wonderful grandaughter was selected as a ‘model’ for the Mamas & Papas stores and now their catalogue has been published, and here she is. Is she a ‘natural’ or what? We only have to point a camera towards her these days and she goes into one of her poses! Oh, her name is Ariana and she’s just turned 2.

Remember - It’s That Time of Year

We Will Remember Them
We Will Remember Them

There is hardly a more beautiful flower than the Poppy. A field of poppies bring a wonderful blaze of colour to our landscape like no other.

Of course it also is the emblem of remembrance, for those fallen in war and in service to the country.
I saw my first poppy sellers yesterday and I’m now proudly wearing mine on my coat. Please do the same, support the Royal British Legion in their efforts to provide financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants.
Wear your poppy with pride.  http://www.poppy.org

Can You Help With Trip to Pakistan?

October 22nd, 2008

I need your help.

I’m hoping to arrange a trip to a place called Ramnagar in the Gujwanrala district of the Punjab. A sort of personal Adventure Holiday.

Why? The forefathers of my old Regiment fought a battle in the Sikh War there and it is still celebrated today - even though it was an unmitigated disaster for us. Our Commander, Lieutenant Colonel William Havelock, lost his life there. In the year 2000 I raised funds for the restoration of the burial site in order to prevent its likely devastation in the next rain season. We also provided books to a local school.

Ramnagar was first heard of around 1706 when it was in the hands of Charat Singh, the great grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In addition to the burial site there is also a Summer Palace built by Ranjit Singh (not the Golden Temple) although it is now in a state of ruin.

I expect that there will be about twelve of us and we’re getting on so we’ll need our comforts. If you can offer any advice about how such a trip could be arranged please leave a comment - it will be followed up.

Over the years Ramnagar has been known as Rasulnagar,  Rasul-Nagar, Ras-ul-Nagar, Ramnuggar, Ramnuggur and possibly many others. If you want to comment on the ‘trip’, Ramnagar, the Battle, Ranjit Singh, Havelock, or any other related topic, please go ahead.

The Overland Kumuka Truck

Kumuka Overland Truck

Kumuka Overland Truck

A feature of the Africa Overland Tour is the instantly-recognisable Kumuka Truck.

With their distinctive blue colour the big blue truck virtually becomes your home, perhaps for many weeks, so Kumuka make the trucks as comfortable as possible. Onboard you’ll find mostly forward facing seats, a coolbox, stereo, safe for valuables and even a small library. There is ample storage space and all of the camping/cooking equipment is carried on board. The vehicles carry a comprehensive range of spare parts and they are all well maintained by local mechanics.

Have you been on one? Why not let us hear your experiences? We’d love to hear from you. Please add your blog comments below.
